Meet Stephen, a sweet, active, and affectionate little boy who was born in April of 2009. Stephen has expressed a strong desire to have a family – one that, as he describes, will show him a lot of love, play with him, protect him when he needs it, and tuck him in at night. His two fears, he recently shared, are the dark and not having a family of his own.
Stephen lived with his birth family until the age of 9 when he came to be in the care of a group home in Colombia. Stephen is described by his caregivers as an active child who enjoys sports, loves cars, and easily interacts with his peers. He particularly enjoys his bedtime routine of reading stories and playing/listening to music.
Stephen is currently in third grade where he enjoys physical education, computer science, and his favorite school subject – art! His teachers report that Stephen struggles in the subject of English as he has difficulty reading and understanding long texts. Stephen has stated that the two wishes for his life are “to have a family and to be a car driver.”
Stephen is slightly behind his peers academically. He is enrolled in the third grade, whereas for his chronological age he would be in the fifth grade. Stephen has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) that is currently managed with medication as well as occupational therapy and counseling. His therapists and caregivers have shared that Stephen shows enormous potential for learning in a loving, caring, and protective family environment. He is ready to be matched with a family immediately!
