Pero, sorprendentemente, nunca hab\u00eda conocido a padres biol\u00f3gicos en el proceso de dar a sus hijos en adopci\u00f3n.<br \/>\nCuando Leslie Nobel, mi colega del Departamento de Padres Biol\u00f3gicos, me pidi\u00f3 que fuera traductora de ruso para una pareja que estaba elaborando un plan de adopci\u00f3n para su hijo, acept\u00e9 con gran angustia. Estaba muy dispuesto a ayudar a la familia, pero mi inmigrante ruso de primera generaci\u00f3n se hab\u00eda estado oxidando en un rinc\u00f3n mientras yo segu\u00eda adelante con mi vida. Ni siquiera sab\u00eda decir \u201cadopci\u00f3n\u201d y tuve que llamar inmediatamente a mi madre para pedir ayuda: \u201c<em>adocaryt\u201d<\/em> (para hacer de uno una hija, <em>docha <\/em>significa hija) o \u201c<em>asinovyt<\/em>\u201d (hacer de uno un hijo; <em>pecado <\/em>significa hijo).<\/p>\n<p>Conocer a Vlad y Mar\u00eda fue una experiencia sorprendente. Son extremadamente atractivos y parecen ser un par de patinadores art\u00edsticos. En los Estados Unidos, con una visa de trabajo, cuando Mar\u00eda dio a luz, ten\u00edan la intenci\u00f3n de criar a su hijo. Aprend\u00ed que el pa\u00eds en el que residen no podr\u00eda satisfacer las necesidades especiales de su hijo y que estar\u00eda expuesto a una vida dif\u00edcil e insatisfactoria. Visitaron a su beb\u00e9, lloraron a menudo por la p\u00e9rdida de no poder criarlo, pero sab\u00edan que la adopci\u00f3n era la elecci\u00f3n correcta. Asist\u00ed a varias reuniones con ellos, tropezando con el idioma que alguna vez fue mi lengua materna. A menudo me he preguntado acerca de los padres biol\u00f3gicos de nuestros hijos nacidos en el extranjero. El proceso de adopci\u00f3n oculta las identidades de los padres biol\u00f3gicos, nos brinda fragmentos de informaci\u00f3n a partir de los cuales s\u00f3lo podemos crear escenarios; Simplemente por circunstancias de tiempo y geograf\u00eda, llegu\u00e9 a conocer a esta pareja. Aunque no es del todo justo, no pude evitar imaginar la historia de Mar\u00eda y Vlad superpuesta a las historias de todos los ni\u00f1os a los que he ayudado a ubicar. Mientras habl\u00e1bamos, fui testigo de muchas de las mismas emociones que veo con los adoptados y los padres adoptivos: arrepentimiento, p\u00e9rdida, confusi\u00f3n, alivio y esperanza.<\/p>\n<p>Todo esto culmin\u00f3 con el honor de asistir a la colocaci\u00f3n del ni\u00f1o y presenciar los momentos a veces inc\u00f3modos y a veces conmovedores entre las dos familias. A la hora de comer, hab\u00eda confusi\u00f3n sobre qui\u00e9n dar\u00eda el biber\u00f3n: cada madre intentaba acomodarse a la otra. Tuve que reprimir las l\u00e1grimas cuando la madre adoptiva le dio a Mar\u00eda un hermoso collar con la piedra de nacimiento de su hijo. Tuve que reprimir la risa mientras los pap\u00e1s intentaban llamarse a los celulares de los dem\u00e1s para programar los n\u00fameros. La recepci\u00f3n era p\u00e9sima y al final ambos terminaron uno al lado del otro en la ventana, con los tel\u00e9fonos en lo alto, tratando de conectar los dos tel\u00e9fonos que estaban a cent\u00edmetros de distancia. Ambas esposas se re\u00edan a carcajadas y se tomaban fotograf\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p>Pronto lleg\u00f3 el momento de irse y un estado de \u00e1nimo m\u00e1s pesado se apoder\u00f3 de ella. Las conversaciones sobre Skype y los aeropuertos m\u00e1s cercanos cambiaron y todos admiraron al beb\u00e9 y, finalmente, lo entregaron a sus padres biol\u00f3gicos para despedirse. Hubo l\u00e1grimas, por supuesto, pero tambi\u00e9n sonrisas. Salimos al ascensor y Vlad y Mar\u00eda se fueron a llorar en privado.<\/p>\n<p>Ese d\u00eda, mi mundo de adopci\u00f3n creci\u00f3 y se redujo al mismo tiempo. Creci\u00f3 porque me dieron la oportunidad de tener una experiencia nueva e invaluable, y se redujo porque las diferencias entre la adopci\u00f3n nacional e internacional no son tan marcadas como yo cre\u00eda. S\u00ed, <em>c\u00f3mo<\/em> La adopci\u00f3n es diferente, pero en muchos sentidos es s\u00f3lo una cuesti\u00f3n de geograf\u00eda.
