Making an adoption plan is an act of courage that deserves ongoing support. At Spence Chapin, support doesn’t end after placement. We provide free counseling to help process relinquishment grief and navigate evolving open adoption relationships. Through support groups, workshops, events, and resources, birth parents can find connection and understanding. Birth parent voices and stories matter – and we want to support them before, during, and after adoption.

If you are pregnant or have recently given birth and are unsure about parenting, Spence-Chapin offers free, confidential, and nonjugdmental counseling on all of the options available to you. We also partner with hundreds of health and social service organizations across New York, New Jersey, and Arizona, so we can connect you to local resources and support.
If you are considering adoption for your baby, Spence-Chapin will guide you through every step of the process. We will ensure you have a free independent attorney and can offer you pregnancy-related financial assistance. We respect your right to choose the adoptive family, and to select an open or closed adoption. Spence-Chapin can also provide 24/7 care for your baby in the home of one of our Interim Care providers while you make a plan for the future.

Making an adoption plan for your child is never easy; it is normal to feel many emotions. At Spence-Chapin, support does not end when your child goes home with their adoptive family. We want to make sure that you have the support you need. We provide a package of free counseling sessions for all Birth Parents to help process emotions and/or navigate new and evolving relationships with your child and their adoptive parents. We are available to you at any time, even years after placement.
These emotions can be complicated if you feel like you made a good plan for your child, or you have few people you can talk to or who understand. You may wonder about the best way to communicate with your child’s adoptive parents. You may find yourself struggling with wanting more or even less contact than you originally agreed to. You may question your place in your child’s life or worry about intruding on their family, even though you will always be an important person to your child. We are here to help you determine how to move forward with your goals and plans. We can assist you in speaking with your family or other people in your life.

This supportive space offers solace and camaraderie, full of others at different stages in their placement journey who truly know what you may be going through. Discussions cover themes like managing grief, navigating open or closed adoption, and the challenges of communicating with friends and family regarding your adoption plan.
