Support for Adult Adoptees at Every Stage of the Journey

You’re not “being difficult.” You’re navigating something complex.

Exploring your adoption story can bring up many emotions and questions. You may be thinking about your birthplace or birth culture, processing DNA test results, considering birth family search or first contact, navigating adoption reunion, or wondering how this affects relationships with your adoptive family. It’s possible to feel grief and relief, hope and fear, curiosity and loyalty all at once. There is space to explore all of it.

Spence-Chapin’s adoptee support sessions offer communication and decision-making guidance, not therapy, judgment, or pressure to feel a certain way. Whether you are looking for birth family, reconnecting with culture or identity, or making meaning of what was lost, preserved, or unknown, you can move at your own pace. We’ll help you clarify what you want, prepare for difficult conversations, set boundaries, and decide what feels right for you.

Who These Sessions Are For

Adoptee support sessions may be a good fit if you are:

  • Searching for birth family or processing DNA test results
  • Exploring birthplace, heritage, birth culture, or identity
  • Considering first contact with birth parents or birth relatives
  • Already in reunion or early communication
  • Navigating loyalty, grief, curiosity, or uncertainty
  • Deciding what to share with adoptive parents or loved ones
  • Estranged from adoptive parents and considering reconnection

You do not have to choose between relationships or have all the answers before reaching out. We can help you slow down, sort through what matters, and choose your next step with clarity, boundaries, and honesty.

How It Works

Our adoptee support sessions offer practical guidance centered on your goals. During your adoptee consultation, we’ll talk through what to expect and how to move forward at your own pace.

1

Start with where you are now

We’ll talk through what’s happening, whether you are considering a search, preparing for birth family contact, navigating reunion, or planning a difficult family conversation.

2

Clarify your needs and boundaries

Together, we’ll identify what you want, what you’re not ready for, what you want to share, and what emotional safety looks like for you.

3

Prepare for communication

Reunion preparation may include planning conversations, drafting messages, thinking through possible responses, and finding language that feels honest and grounded.

4

Move at your own pace

There is no pressure to search, reunite, reconcile, forgive, explain, or disclose more than you want to. You stay in control of your choices throughout the process.

What This Is (and is Not)

Adoptee 支持 sessions are best understood as non-clinical support. 佢係 not 治療 and does not promote reunion, reconciliation, or disclosure. Instead, it focuses on communication, clarity, and decision-making, with your goals and autonomy at the center.

There are conversations in an adoptee’s life that carry extraordinary weight. Not because they are impossible, but because they matter so deeply — to your sense of self, to your relationships, and to the life you are building on your own terms. Whether you are thinking about searching for your birth family, already in reunion, or trying to figure out how to talk to your adoptive parents about any of it, you are navigating something genuinely complex. And you do not have to figure it out alone.

常見問題

We know you have questions. Here are answers to some of the things adopted people seeking support ask us most. If you do not see what you are looking for, please reach out.

Is this the same as therapy?

No. This service is not therapy or clinical counseling. It is a one-on-one session focused on communication, preparation, boundaries, and decision-making.

If you are looking for mental health treatment, trauma therapy, or clinical adoption counseling, therapy may be a better fit or a helpful additional support. We can help you think through what kind of support may be appropriate.

No. You do not have to be ready to contact your birth family to begin. Many adult adoptees use this support to decide whether they want to search, what they hope to learn, and what they need before taking action.

You can use sessions to talk through fears, expectations, timing, privacy, and boundaries before making any decisions.

Yes. Support sessions can help you prepare to talk with your adoptive parents about birth family search, reunion, DNA test results, adoption paperwork, cultural identity, or boundaries.

We can help you decide what to say, what not to say, when to have the conversation, and how to respond if your adoptive parents feel hurt, anxious, angry, or confused.

In some situations, facilitated conversations may be available or appropriate. Many clients begin with one-on-one support sessions first so they can clarify their goals, boundaries, and emotional readiness.

If you are interested in birth family mediation or a facilitated family conversation, we can discuss whether that is the right next step during your consultation.

You do not have to decide everything at once. One-on-one sessions can help you consider whether reaching out feels right, what kind of contact you may want, and what boundaries you need. If you choose to reconnect, we can help you prepare a first message or conversation that feels clear, honest, and emotionally safe.

That possibility can be painful, and it is important to prepare for it. During your session, we’ll help you think through expectations, emotional support, boundaries, and next steps if a birth relative does not respond or does not want contact.

Adoption reunion rejection can bring up grief, anger, confusion, or renewed questions about identity and belonging. You do not have to process those possibilities alone.

Yes. DNA test results in adoption can lead to unexpected discoveries, new relatives, and complicated decisions. We’ll give you the space to slow down, understand your options, and decide whether or how to reach out.

We can also help you think through what to share with adoptive family, birth family, or loved ones, and how to protect your privacy and emotional wellbeing.

No, you do not need to live in New York if sessions are offered virtually. One-on-one support sessions may be available by video or phone depending on provider availability and your location.

If there are any location-based limitations, we will review those with you before beginning.

We help all adopted people, regardless of who they were adopted through. We welcome all adoptees to reach out if they are interested in this service.

We look forward to hearing from you.
