Sarah & David

David, a Cuban-Dominican, born and raised in the Bronx, and Sarah, a Jewish Midwesterner and NYC transplant, met in NYC in 2015 and fell madly in love after spending their first date laughing hysterically, singing karaoke, and eating a home-cooked meal. After a passionate romance filled with traveling, building a home, and embracing each other’s cultures and traditions, we were married in Cleveland (Sarah’s hometown) in August 2019.

In addition to our shared silly sense of humor and our strong belief that we should live with purpose in serving to others, we bonded over our shared commitment to and love of children– whether our students or youth we served in NYC and Westchester, our 6 nephews and nieces, or our honorary titles as “Auntie” and “Uncle” to our many friends’ children. We realized that we were pretty darn good at caring for, loving, and supporting the many kids in our lives, so much so that we should have children of our own.

We see open adoption as a way to expand our “team”– welcoming a baby that we will love unconditionally, respect, support, teach, and cheer for along their journey, but also collaborating with you, the birth parent(s), to provide the best possible life for our baby.

About Sarah

Job: HS English teacher (15 years in!)

Hobbies: I love to tend our garden in the Bronx, read books of all genres from fantasy to nonfiction, write about my work in education, spend time in the great outdoors with David and Pickles the dog, dance and sing wherever/whenever I can, and bake extravagant layer cakes to celebrate friends and family.

Fun Fact: Sarah won her high school’s Battle of the Bands singing and playing her original songs on electric guitar and can play over 7 musical instruments very mediocrely (but has a blast doing so!).

Acerca de David

Job: Social Worker

Hobbies: I love watching baseball (let’s go Yanks!), playing Dungeons and Dragons, reading a good book, and eating all of my wife’s extravagant layer cakes!

Fun Fact: David was lucky enough to live and study abroad in India and Kenya.

Nuestras vidas

We live in David’s childhood home, a sunlit apartment that has housed 3 (soon to be 4!) generations of his family in Riverdale, a diverse neighborhood in the Bronx with tons of parks, playgrounds, libraries, and views of the Hudson River.

On weeknights, we squeeze every ounce of family time after a long day, cooking dinner together and talking about our days. Staying active is important to us, so in the evening, we take our dog Pickles on long walks, go swimming at our gym, or tend to our garden.

On weekends and school breaks, we love to host dinners and visit with our families and friends and their children. We are grateful to have a strong network of other parents and family members to provide support and guidance in our journey to be parents. You can also find us relaxing by playing Dungeons and Dragons with friends, watching and discussing movies and books, or playing video games together or virtually with family.

Nuestra Familia

We both come from families that value connection and creating and maintaining our traditions, whether near or far. Throughout the week, we spend time calling and Facetiming the important people in our lives, particularly our siblings, parents, and nieces and nephews, and spend time during summers and vacations traveling to and hosting our family across the US. Our bonds are loving and strong, no matter how far!

We have taken up the baton in hosting Thanksgiving for 20+ family members and chosen family, including friends, coworkers, and neighbors. Our traditions are often celebrations of our intercultural and interfaith connections (we are sometimes referred to as Jewbans or Jewminicans, celebrating our Jewish, Cuban, and Dominican heritage). You will find people of all backgrounds and experiences sharing in our joy and heritage at our Passover seder table, Chanukkah latke party, and Christmas Secret Santa.

Reflexiones finales

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering us in this deeply meaningful and courageous decision. We will raise your child with unconditional love, joy, and every opportunity to thrive. They will be so loved and cared for, not only by us, but by a vibrant, caring community of family and friends who are ready to welcome them with open arms. Your child will grow up knowing they are cherished, supported, and celebrated.
