In early October 2026, we got to play with Amy and Ethan, a closely bonded sibling pair who are currently living in a children’s home (orphanage) in Colombia. Although Amy is the younger sister, it was clear from the moment we met that she takes on a caregiving role with others and is especially protective of her big brother Ethan!

Amy is clearly very smart, spelling her name for us in English at only age 5! She had a great imagination as we played together, pretending to be a cat and then a doctor. She told us (in Spanish) that her favorite foods are strawberries and grapes.

Ethan has a lot of energy and benefits from activities like running, biking, and playing games with balls. He told us (in Spanish) that he “only likes junk food and does not like spinach” – typical for most 6-year-old boys!

Given their early traumatic experiences, it is understandable that Amy and Ethan struggle with forming attachments and emotional regulation. Fortunately, they are part of Spence-Chapin’s Granny Program, which has paired them with their very own Granny who visits Monday through Friday to pour love and attention into them through developmentally appropriate activities that help them grow.

Both Amy and Ethan receive supportive services for behavioral issues and are making progress. They need a family who is patient and understanding, and who can take the time to ensure they continue to receive therapeutic interventions. If that is you or someone you know, we would love to talk with you more about Amy and Ethan!
