EMILY, AGE 9, COLOMBIA

Emily 2

In October 2026 I was lucky to get to meet Emily, a sweet 9-year-old girl whipped up a meal playing pretend kitchen. In real life she says her favorite food is chicken. Emily really likes playing pretend, playing basketball and dancing. She colored a picture for me (check it out below) and told me it was me as a teacher. Emily has been working on learning to regulate her emotions and how to ask for help. She is getting support on this from her Granny (part of Spence-Chapin’s Granny Program.)

Emily shared that she doesn’t really like school. She has a diagnosis of ADHD and a learning disorder which makes school more of a struggle for her. Emily recently began medications for ADHD and her Granny says she is seeing improvements every day.

Emily came into the child welfare system after experiencing abuse and neglect, along with her three younger brothers. While all four siblings are currently living together in the children’s home, the legal and therapeutic teams in charge of their cases have determined that it is in Emily’s best interest to be adopted individually. Emily is receiving supportive services around this difficult decision.

The right family for Emily is one who is willing to continue supporting her as she works through tough issues with love and patience. Her new family will need to advocate for her within the school system and also be willing to access counseling and medication management services. Ideally, Emily’s new family will be open to remaining in contact with her brothers and the adoptive families they find. Please contact our team at 212-400-8150 o envíanos un correo electrónico a [email protected] to learn more about Emily.

If you receive and accept the referral of Emily through Spence-Chapin, you will benefit from the generosity of our new Briden Adoption Fund, which can offset the costs of adopting an international Waiting Child. The Briden Adoption Fund is made possible by the generosity of a Spence-Chapin family.
