In early October, we spent time with this little girl living in a children’s home (orphanage) in Colombia. Ida is 9 years old and in the 4th grade. She told us that math is her favorite subject, but she is less fond of Spanish and social studies. Ida says that pink is her favorite color, which was evident as she quickly chose the pink crayon to fill out an “all about me” worksheet. She wrote on this worksheet about her dream of having two parents (which she further explained to us as “then there will be twice the love for me”) and that she hopes to have aunts, uncles and cousins to play with. Ida loves all animals, especially cats, dogs, rabbits and even elephants! She hopes to become a veterinarian when she grows up.

While we were with Ida, there was a lot of laughter. She loves being silly, and her giggle is the sweetest!

Like most children in the child welfare system, Ida experienced abuse and neglect from the very adults who were supposed to keep her safe. Understandably, when she first arrived at the children’s home, she expressed her feelings in big ways that weren’t always productive. Her social worker shared with us that Ida has made significant improvement since arriving in their care. She described Ida now as “calmer and more able to recognize her emotions.” Ida’s diagnoses include ADHD, for which she is prescribed medication.

The right family for Ida is one that loves animals and pink things, and who can support Ida as she continues to learn how to process her big emotions and how best to manage her ADHD. Could that family be yours?
