Main Profile Photo

My family is a family of one. It consists of myself. I desire to become a parent through adoption because it’s is something I always talked about when I was much younger in my early teens. When I tried to have a child of my own and that didn’t work out, I came back to the possibility of adoption because I realized that what I wanted was to have a child not to have a birth and those are two different things. What I wanted was to love a child and raise them and protect them and give them advice and help them understand the world and find joy and meaning in life and discover their talents and develop them and flourish and live abundantly like they’re supposed to. I love children and when I really thought about it, I knew that I didn’t have to give birth to a child to truly love them.

My Life

My life is the life of a typical college professor. When I go to work, I teach my students and I do my grading and I do my research and my writing. I don’t have a 9-5. I have a flexible schedule and I always wanted to because I always wanted to have time to spend with my children.

On a typical teaching day, my first class would start at 11:40 am. I would leave home around 10:30 and get to campus and teach my class then maybe I would have office hours and then leave campus in the afternoon around 3:00. Or if it was a day when I had multiple classes to teach then I would usually leave campus by around 6:00. I don’t really have any typical days to be honest. The only things that are fixed are my teaching times which is generally from 11:40 to about 6:00 on the days when I teach multiple classes.

Outside of that some days I have choir practice in the evening, some days I have therapy sessions, some days I meet up with friends, some days I have endless meetings at work, and some days I’m done by 1:00 in the afternoon. And then some times of the year, school is out and we’re on vacation, it really varies.

My Family

My family is wonderful. In my immediate family, the only person in my generation with children is my youngest brother and he has three adorable children who all live in Toronto with him and his wife. I would say that our family traditions involve getting together for the holidays and getting together during the summer when the kids are out of school.

Sometimes we go to Canada and sometimes they come here. But we always make an effort to have some relaxed family time when we can just eat and nap and watch movies, go to the park or just go to Target which is my nephew’s favorite store (we had a surprise 6th birthday party there and all the workers helped out), and go on road trips and just be together. That’s really our favorite thing – to just be together as a family hanging out.

Final Thoughts

Open adoption is something very new to me. So is adoption and everything it involves. I imagine it’s the same for the birth family. I look forward to taking this journey together and growing in the fullness of what life and love through adoption can be.
