BIRTH PARENT SERVICES

We are here for you.

If you are pregnant or have recently given birth and are unsure about parenting, Spence-Chapin offers free, confidential, and nonjugdmental counseling on all of the options available to you. We also partner with hundreds of health and social service organizations in neighborhoods throughout New York City, Upstate New York, and New Jersey, and can help connect you to local resources and support.

If you are considering adoption for your baby, Spence-Chapin will guide you through every step of the process. We will ensure you have a free independent attorney and can offer you pregnancy-related financial assistance. We respect your right to choose the adoptive family, and to select an open or closed adoption. Spence-Chapin can also provide 24/7 care for your baby in the home of one of our Interim Care providers while you make a plan for the future.

We recognize that adoption is not a moment in time, but a lifelong journey, and that it does not end at placement. Spence-Chapin provides counseling and support services for birth parents and can connect you to supportive communities both in person and online. Spence-Chapin also hosts an annual Birth Mother Gathering to bring birth mothers together for community, support, and sharing.

For Professionals

Every Step of the Way

Spence-Chapin provides compassionate, comprehensive support to birth parents from the moment they come through our door and throughout a lifetime.

Beginning with unbiased counseling on all of the options available, where a dedicated social worker explores each option thoroughly and without judgment, every woman we see is empowered to make her own decisions and plans for her future. For those who have already given birth, Spence-Chapin offers free respite care for the newborn through our Interim Care Program, giving birth parents the breathing space to make a plan for the future with their social worker. For those who choose adoption, Spence-Chapin adheres to a Birth Parent Bill of Rights that ensures a birth parent-led process where birth parents are able to meet with adoptive families of their choosing, have access to free independent legal counsel, and are always guided by a dedicated social worker who only works with birth parents. Through our counseling and community programming services, every birth parent we serve also has lifelong access to the support they need, every step of the way.

A Supportive Community

A supportive community can be an essential part of everyone’s journey, especially during challenging times. We are there to connect you to a supportive community of peers during and after receiving options counseling services from Spence-Chapin. We partner with organizations who truly understand the journey of a birth parent and can connect you to virtual and in-person support groups and events in your area. Spence-Chapin also has lifelong counseling services available virtually or in-person with our therapists, and hosts a Birth Mother Gathering every year where birth mothers of any age, at any stage in their journey, can come together to share experiences and support each other.

Commitment to serving all people in need including minors, LGBTQ people, immigrants and undocumented immigrants, those with addiction, those with chronic illness and survivors of rape, incest or other crimes. Please call us for confidential assistance.
