Laura Schlesinger currently volunteers as an Interim Care Provider at Spence Chapin. Laura has been caring for these babies since 2016 and to date has loved more than 35 little ones. She describes this very important work as her true joy, both in nurturing the babies and in providing the time and space for birth families to navigate the decisions they are facing. Laura has been married to her husband Mark since 1988 and together they have three grown children who have grown up loving the Spence babies as well. While raising her family, she volunteered extensively in the elementary, middle school and high school PTAs, serving as president, vice president and in numerous chairperson roles. Laura also served six years on the Syosset Board of Education. Before she stayed home to care for her children, Laura worked as an elementary school teacher, both in 5th grade and the Enrichment/Gifted Program. Prior to teaching she was a Project Manager at Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and a Systems Programmer at Thomson McKinnon Securities and Automatic Data Processing. Laura received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Fordham University in 1986 and a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Hofstra University in 1991.
Board Member since 2024. Interim Care Provider.
“I serve on the board because I am already committed to, and believe in, Spence Chapin and their mission. Serving on the board provides an opportunity to do more for the organization and the community it supports.”
